Churchill’s Revenge

Churchill’s Revenge

The policies of the prime minister enact the revenge of Sir Winston Churchill. As Conservative Party leader, his defeat in the 1945 General Election enabled the founding of the Welfare State. This British Arcadia was the solitary public benefit of the six-year war. But, as in the classical memento mori, even Death (‘Ego’) inhabits Arcady, and Margaret Thatcher became the personification of Death in Arcadia.
