Text:

Patrick Eyres. Classic Ground of the Sublime (the 18C Sublime examined through the responses of Scott, Cotman and Turner to the river Greta at Rokeby; and the Cold War Sublime explored through military presence in this Pennine landscape. This contemplative walk follows the Greta from its Pennine source to the Meeting of the Waters at Rokeby, and the Tees upstream, through the epic Whin Sill waterfalls of High Force and Cauldron Snout, to Teeshead on Cross Fell, summit of the Pennine range. Fifty years on, it invokes A. Wainwright’s 1938 Pennine Journey, an attempt to take refuge in the fells from the threat of war, and celebrates the joys of walking).
